Panel 1:
Emily sits in a window frame, one leg dangling outside, smoking a cigarette and reading the Sir Higgens book She looks deep in thought.
Emily (thought): “There’s something to all this, I just know there is. But what was Amelia doing with spellcraft?”

Panel 2:
Outside, a girl, Maude Nguyen, stands in the Trents’ yard, hands on her hips, calling up to Emily. There is a car parked in the street behind her.
Maude: “Emily! You fiend, are you smoking again?!”

Panel 3:
Back in the window, Emily smirks and flicks ash from her cigarette. She snaps her book shut.
Emily: “Again? I never stopped! I’ll be right down, Maude!”

Panel 4:
Inside Emily’s bedroom. She hurriedly shoves the book under a pillow as her mother calls up for her.
Mrs. Trent (off-panel): “Emily! The Nguyens are here!”
Emily: “Yup, I’ll be right down!”

Panel 5:
Emily runs out the door downstairs, adjusting her hat while Mrs. Trent leans in suspiciously.
Mrs. Trent: “Do I smell cigarettes on you? Emily!”
Emily (grinning): “Well, I’ll be back later!”
